CES – Las Vegas, NV – Jan. 8, 2004 - Pen&Internet, LLC, a provider of next-generation electronic ink and handwriting recognition solutions today announced a collaboration with Transmeta Corporation, the leader in efficient computing, to bring to market compelling software applications for a new category of computers: the Ultra Personal Computer (UPC).
The UPC represents a new mobile computing paradigm that delivers the power and performance of a desktop computer with all the portability and size benefits of a handheld PDA-sized device.
At CES, Transmeta will demonstrate Pen&Internet's latest advanced handwriting recognition and electronic ink products on the world's first shipping Ultra Personal Computer. Produced by Antelope Technologies, the Modular Computing Core (MCC) device is bundled with Pen&Internet's ritePen advanced handwriting recognition application, which also enables riteForm recognition solution for processing handwritten forms on mobile pen-enabled devices.
The UPC is targeted to mobile professionals, including mobile sales and field service personnel. It addresses the growing needs of users who require a single, portable device capable of running all of the applications they already use. Based on estimates from analyst firm Creative Strategies, the UPC market is expected to grow from 350,000 units in sales in 2004 to 1.7 million by 2006.
"The real promise of a UPC is its ability to be a compete mirror of people's primary PCs that can fit in the pocket and be carried with them at all times," said Tim Bajarin, President of analyst firm Creative Strategies. "Pen&Internet's handwriting recognition, advanced note-taking and forms processing applications are a natural fit and ideally suited for pen input on UPC devices."
Pen&Internet's ritePen allows users to intelligently navigate the desktop and write on the full screen in smooth electronic ink – and their handwriting is automatically converted into text and entered into target applications. riteForm is an advanced forms recognition solution which adds context awareness to handwritten forms, substantially improving their recognition by assigning custom vocabularies and data templates to individual fields. riteMail is an advanced note-taking and communications application with handwriting, shape and chart recognition, smart printing and other features.
"Transmeta is excited to be working with innovative companies like Pen&Internet to create the UPC market," said Arthur L. Swift, Senior VP of Marketing for Transmeta. "Pen&Internet's expertise in electronic ink and natural handwriting recognition will help enable the market and will likely drive further advancements in efficient computing."
The emergence of the UPC product category has been hastened by the low power consumption and reduced heat dissipation characteristics of the Transmeta Efficeon™ and Crusoe® families of high-performance processors. The UPC is a full featured handheld PC that runs Windows XP and can be physically or wirelessly connected to an external monitor and keyboard, much like a notebook or PDA, eliminating the need for synchronizing applications, multiple operating platforms and software licenses. UPCs are lightweight, ranging from 9 oz to 1.4 pounds, have high quality screens and 1.8" disk drives that enable capacities of 10GB-40GB in a small form factor.
"We are proud to be working with Transmeta, known for its pioneering developments in the UPC platform and efficient computing," said Leonid Kitainik, general manager for Pen&Internet. "Users will benefit from Pen&Internet's note-taking and handwriting recognition solutions in their general applications and forms."
